Rotax Service and Time Before Overhaul
The popular Diamond DA20 Katana came to the USA with Rotax power, and while the Continental IO240 has largely taken over the DA20 fleet in North America, the Rotax-powered DA20 A1 remains in production in Europe. But don’t fret: you can still buy a new Rotax-powered aircraft in North America: The Diamond HK36 Motor Glider comes with either the Rotax 912 or turbocharged Rotax 914.
In the HK36 motorglider application, this engine starts with a twelve year or 1200 hour life. With a service bulletin (S.B 914-041), normally performed at overhaul, the Rotax TBO is extended to 2000 hours and 15 years.
At overhaul, the Rotax operator has two choices:
- Factory new
Factory new will include all new cases crank, camshaft, etc – new is new. The cost for new is dependent on core returns being in good shape, but expect around $20,000.
Overhaul will, of course, be less costly. Budget $10- 15,000 and allow for some downtime. Our customers have seen around a month of downtime in two recent cases.
Who Does the Work?
In North America, Rotech Research handles parts and overhaul distribution. Since the company is located in British Columbia, central states and east coast customers often get their support via Lockwood Aviation Supply in Sebring, FL.
What’s involved in the overhaul?
The Rotax overhaul kit includes a new crank, valves, rings, seals and gaskets. Other components are replaced on condition. Crank cases are replaced with new, as are most cylinders.
